What is Intelligence? - How the Education System Might be Changing Our Definition
To begin this I would like to preface why I chose this particular topic. I will also be using two articles one on the theory of intelligence and the other on how we might change our perspective about intelligence. This topic is important to me because I think that intelligence spans a far greater scale than the percentage at the top of students' paper. This issue has plagued me most of my school life because I was never considered "intelligent" enough. I was average because my score did not say a number above my peers. I think the message the education sometimes sends to young students about defining their intelligence is something that does not encompass the many possibilities and capabilities the student might posses. The "Theories of Intelligence" article shows the many kinds of intelligence humans may posses. Among the "Book Smart" many people think of; Intelligence is more than one person's ability to solve an equation or write a paper. Below is one theory of intelligence and how it might span more than the average school setting; according to Robert Stenberg Intelligence is, "
- Practical intelligence--the ability to do well in informal and formal educational settings; adapting to and shaping one's environment; street smarts.
- Experiential intelligence--the ability to deal with novel situations; the ability to effectively automate ways of dealing with novel situations so they are easily handled in the future; the ability to think in novel ways.
- Componential intelligence--the ability to process information effectively. This includes metacognitive, executive, performance, and knowledge-acquisition components that help to steer cognitive processes. "
These categories that are listed can obviously be stretched farther than math class. I think that is where schools could improve. This also ties into the persuasion of social media, but that is a different topic in its entirety. The next article is how we could change our perspective on intelligence. I think this really hits home to me for personal and political reasons. Growing up I could never tell someone the expansion of the universe or how to do math, or what chemical make-up is in the composition of the human body. We think of smart people as prodigal children who DO know those things. People's talents were made for much more than the classroom and while reading these articles I saw how intelligence can mean many different things. The second article "Changing Perspectives About Intelligence" is also very important to my point. The author states how in order for any change to be made society has to break the habit of assimilating intelligence with aptitude based quantities and numbers and instead teach intelligence as a progressive growth of conceptual thinking and process with a basis of knowledge structures. I think this is a very valuable topic that could change the way we view the rest of society when given the word "intelligent" to describe it.

Slow Cooked
Now I am going to write about oxtail stew. It may sound disgusting but oxtail can be slow cooked into a fall apart beautiful meal. Its flavor is that of beef and is slightly milder than it. You can purchase it in packages with the bone in. As you can imagine, the tail of the ox does a lot of work so you will need to slow cook it otherwisse it will be very tough. The more the muscle is used, the tougher it will be so the longer and slower you should cook it. Depending on how much oxtail you purchase quantities may very. I purchased two pounds from Walmart for 10 dollars. Ox tail is very versatile because you have to slow cook it so any flavors you combine it with will infuse in the meat. This stew takes around 8+ hours, but it requires very little maintenance. I cooked mine on the stove top but you can put it in an over or possibly a crock pot. Man upscale restaurants have begun to use oxtail in their menus. Follow this for a Sunday dinner for the week.
The quantities listed will be for two pounds of oxtail each piece about 2-3 inches in diameter. Leave the bone in because it will keep the meat from separating into unidentifiable pieces. You will need the vegetables listed but in your preferred quantities. You can add any vegetables. This is a very versatile dish and can be tailored to your own tastes. For other vegetables try hearty ones that will keep their shape during cooking like potatoes, parsnips, and other large vegetables. I used carrots and celery with onion as mise en place. Which is a term used to describe the prep work before making a dish. Start by searing the oxtail in a smoking pan with olive oil. Brown the oxtail on all sides and place it on a plate. Add four sliced yellow onions and the diced carrots and celery. If you have potatoes save them for when there is stock... they will only take 30 minutes to cook. If you have frozen peas add those 4-5 minutes before serving. After adding the vegetables stir in 4 table spoons of flour and combine until it is cooked out 1-2 minutes. Then you add the browned meat back in. This is also a good time to add in any other stew meat you may have. Follow by deglazing the pan with 1/3 a bottle of red wine. Wine for cooking should be cheap, dry and not fancy. Any fragrance or fancy infusions will take away from the flavor. I used a Cabernet Sauvingion from Walmart that I purchased for 6.50 dollars. If you would like substitutions I would suggest a guinness beer or slug of stout. If you would like options with out alcohol then chicken or beef stock will do just fine. In this case any liquid, even water, will work fine. Then Scrape the bottom of the pan and add stock or water to cover. Add thyme or other spices now. If they are fresh wait until the end to add them. If you add fresh herbs now, They will wilt and lose their flavor. Ending herbs would be parsley, or cilantro. Depending on your tastes you can can make a gremolata which is a dry dressing with herbs and citrus zest. After you finalize your flavor profile, simmer it for 6-8 hours and serve over rice or potatoes.

3/4 Added Sugar or 3/4 Added Salt?
To reflect on this year I would first like to wonder if I became a better person or a worse person. (Hence the title). What did this year add or take away from my personality. (As a student not socially because that would be a whole different train wreck). As a student I feel like I have learned the importance of time management and balancing what I have to do with things I want to do. My parents (my father) thinks I have done too much this year, but I think it was a good way of learning how to balance extracurricular things with my academics. I was never one to have good grades but I kept decent ones and multitasked through the entire year. This year was definitely the busiest so I had to find efficient ways to study. Most of this came from my Hbio teacher Dr. Fenske. She taught me how to study effectively and how to clear up ideas and concepts quickly.
I learn best by doing, Apparently that is a kinsthetic learner. For example in bio I finally understood meiosis when we did a lab with magnetic beads. I think during this last quarter I can really focus on academics because the sports that took up time like powerlifting are now over. I loved powerlifting so much and I cannot wait for next season. Not only academically but I have found ways to physically be productive and better my body as well as my grades. I found out that powerlifting helped me to be productive because it was a stress reliever. It was also very rewarding and I had my best grades in my hard classes while lifting. I think this year was a combination of good and bad attributes.

Windows
Windows by Lewis Watson uses enjambed to show his hesitation. The song is about keeping old habits that he had while with someone after they broke apart. The use of enjambed in the song is heard when he sings the song with pauses in the lines in the middle of the sentences. It is like he is taking a pause to show his hesitation and solemn attitude towards the subject. He also uses imagery to describe the habits her keeps. He sleeps with the windows open and he is always cold because whoever he is referencing liked them open.
His use of imagery and enjambed allow the song to have a sad, sullen air to it. That is why it's on his album called "There's Four Sad Songs on it". The use of enjambed is more evident in his live presentations of the song when he pauses. His use of imagery paints the picture of a lonely heart still connected to a severed relationship.

Legally Blind Giraffe or Mak??
So over the break Caroline and I went snowboarding. It was then that I realized I had the balance of a legally blind giraffe. Which in case you do not know; it is not good balance. Caroline was a natural at boarding the snow. However yours truly was not. There were two others who were in the class. We were the only two who were not legally adults. Wayne was an airline pilot who had the balance (ironically) of a crashing plane. Jill was (most likely) a "spirited" (annoying) twenty-five year old who most likely frequents bars with cheap mimosas and cosmopolitans. She had the balance of herself after too many brunch appetizers doused in cheap boxed wine to drown her sorrows. She was trying to keep up with her boyfriend who was a professional snowboarder and he seemed to be having quite the time teaching her. I fell a lot but not as much as Jill or Wayne. Caroline on the other hand only fell twice. She blames her talent on her hover board but I roll my eyes.
Jill most likely looked up "How to Snowboard (EASY TUTORIAL)" on YouTube in preparation for the lesson labeled "first timers" to impress Erica, the instructor. I do not mean to be rude but it was a good thing Jill was primarily face down in the snow because her voice was not very pleasant but, she loved to talk. I got very mad that I fell on the mountain and threw my snowboard because I don't like sucking at things. However I really enjoyed the trip and would like to try and not suck some more. The only problem is the lack of snow.
